Roadworks in Tamworth suspended as a result of abuse suffered by the workforce

Roadworks in Tamworth, Staffs have been paused - because crews were threatened.

We had to temporarily stop work on the £1.5 million project to rebuild the Coleshill Street roundabout in #Fazeley. This is after two incidents of threatening behaviour towards the crew working onsite.

The news comes as recent findings have found that over 50% of those in public-facing roles admit they are abused on a weekly basis. Over 70% of admit they are abused at least once a month, and over 80% also admit they do not report abuse because they feel nothing will be done.

Commenting on the decision, a Spokesperson from Staffs CC said,

"Over the past month, we’ve been resurfacing parts of Coleshill Street, Lichfield Street, and Atherstone Street (B5404). Everything was on track to finish today (Friday 20 June).

"But after these incidents, we had no choice but to pause the work. Staff safety always comes first.

"We’ll restart the final part of the work on Monday 30 June. It will take two nights to complete. We’ll be resurfacing and painting new road markings on Coleshill Street Island, County Drive, and Lichfield Street.

"Roads will be closed from 8pm to 6am. Diversions will be clearly marked. Our crews will help residents access their homes if it’s safe to do so.

"It’s a shame that we had to pause the works as our crews were making really good progress on the scheme and were on track to complete these improvements on time.

"However, no one deserves to be abused at work. The safety of our staff will always come first - and any threatening behaviour shown towards them will not be tolerated."
